Gregory Bateson holds that humans and nature are connected in a cybernetic paradigm. This implies that humans think as nature works, and nature works as humans think. If human beings are not a product of nature but a product of this 'connectivity', the biological evolution can be considered as a mental process, and our intended experience as a selective process. Hence, we are connected to all life forms on earth, and the properties that we come to have now are the end results of series of selection process of billions of neural bundles closely interconnected in the ecosystem which we belong to.
"By Means of You: And I will Live in such ways" elucidates the relational aspects by which the digital humans and virtual world created based on computer algorithms get related with us through art works and exhibitions. AI is a technically created artifact, but like Frankenstein born by Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley, it estranges humans, and is out of human control, beyond our comprehension, but comes down to becoming a mirror that illuminates humans. Through this exhibition, we can look deep into a part of the world, which is out of sight and unintelligible, even though it is permeated into the lives of you and us.
"By Means of You: So We will Live in such ways" reveals what we’ve lost or should not forget or a part of the world in which we live, from the viewpoint of the others through nature. Assuming that there is no more nature that goes beyond our perception or sight in virtue of the advancement of natural science and technology, the physical nature we refer to or experience is already humanized nature. In this point, a question comes into our mind; whether nature which cannot be humanized becomes humanized means that humans choose a part of nature to suit their needs and desires. A disaster or a calamity, which is a part of nature, is inevitable and cannot be prevented from its happening, even if we are fully armed with scientific analysis of its causes and effects. That is the very nature, and its force that we, humans cannot do anything about but staying devastated. It reminds us of 天地不仁(heaven and earth, i.e. the nature, is not benevolent and partial, it treats all things on the earth the same and fairly), one of Laozi’s teachings, which denotes in creating and cultivating all things, heaven and earth leave them to nature without forcing them. To put it shortly, humans are a part of nature, and at the same time, apart from nature. Through the stories delivered by the four artists here, we hope you can come into contact with the cybernetical operation with nature, which is already a part of you but is also felt apart from you.
